LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jessica and Cameron Howell are working to raise awareness about a rare condition called SMARD, which their infant son, Brooks Howell, was diagnosed with. SMARD stands for Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress. It is a severe, inherited neuromuscular condition that specifically affects nerve cells in the spinal cord called lower motor neurones.
