LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The411: It's hard to believe that high school students from Louisville and Southern Indiana have an opportunity to earn and be awarded scholarships, internships and employment when they are seniors.

There's a big formal celebration to acknowledge their accomplishments and to award students collectively one million dollars in scholarships.

On Saturday, February 23rd the YMCA Black Achievers Program will celebrate their 40th year of giving youth an opportunity to pay for college.

If you are going to award a million dollars it only makes sense to host the event at Churchill Downs on Millionaires Row as the seniors prepare for their first leg of their collegiate race as an undergraduate student.

This year's keynote speaker will be the winner of Masterchef's season nine Gerron Hurt.  The Louisville native attended Fern Creek High and Western Kentucky University.  He currently lives in Nashvillle, TN where he teaches high school English.

On the first Saturday in May, Kentucky Derby draws thousands to the historic track but only a few people have access to the floor where dignitaries and celebrities watch the greatest two minutes in sports and it's locked down like Fort Knox.

I believe like many who work with young people.  You have to see it so you know how to obtain it.  Black Achievers instills in each child that goals and to dream big because they are obtainable with hard work, dedication and determination.

To support the program purchase your tables, be a sponsor and/or have your business invest in our youth by offering internships, employment and scholarships in your company's name.  Contact Lynn Johnson with the Chestnut Street Family YMCA by calling 502-587-7405.   Or by email at ljohnson@ymcalouisville.org .
