LOUISVILLE, Ga. — Tom Lally is a Multiskilled Journalist at WHAS1 News. Tom joined the station in April 2021 and is a member of the NightTeam. He approaches each story like a neighbor, looking to make Kentuckiana a better place to live.

Before calling the commonwealth home, Tom was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs. He first learned to tell impactful stories as a speech team competitor, starting in High School and continuing at the University of Minnesota where he ranked among the top speakers in the nation.

He entered the journalism industry as a production assistant for NBC News at Super Bowl LII. Eyes widened, he talked the team into taking him on as an intern the following summer. There, he contributed to stories that lead national newscasts and he learned alongside some of the best in the network.

Still, he credits our sister station KARE11 in Minneapolis with shaping the reporter he is today. His first excursion into local news showed him a community is measured by the strength of those who live there. He learned that the heartbroken, the forgotten, and the resilient create a backbone that needs to be taken care of in order for a community to stand proudly.

When he’s not talking to his neighbors, he’s talking to his plants. Though he’s not sure when his odd obsession with house plants began, it’s now a fully-realized fascination. His favorite plant is a Fittonia (featured below) and he wants to see pictures of your favorite plants too!
