(WHAS11) -- Laughter is the sound of hope for Erica Judd, especially when it comes from her six-year-old son Alex. He was born with a rare genetic disorder called L1 Syndrome causing him to have severe medical issues. He’s had four brain surgeries for fluid in his brain, and even a three part stomach surgery. Despite the difficulties, Alex is always smiling.
“He’s the happiest child you’ll ever meet,” Erica told WHAS11 News.
Doctors told Erica that Alex would not survive, but six years later he is better than ever.
“He laughs, and he talks in his own way,” Erica said. Every day is a challenge for the family, and getting Alex around is harder now that he’s older. That is why Erica entered her son into a contest for a new wheelchair lift van. She said that having a new van would allow the family to get Alex out of the house more often.
To his family, Alex is a hero. He’s a little boy who’s shown them the true value of life.
