LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The lightning was so powerful Thursday night authorities say it was strong enough to possibly cause a house fire in the 3900 block of 3rd Street in Louisville. The blaze proved to be deadly.
“It’s just terrible. It's horrifying, it's like a nightmare it really is a true nightmare,” said Betty Davis, a close family friend.
“I can't believe this happened to them. It's just terrible. It shouldn't have happened to them they are very good people,” said Betty Davis.
English Moore, 19 and her grandfather Wakley Hayden, 83 were killed in the blaze. Hayden was bed ridden.
“They gave him a week to live. She kept him strong for one month for two months almost and that's just sad that a lightening takes him out,” said Billy Davis, who lives next door and tried to save the victims.
“We go in try, to get in we couldn't get past that front door. There was so much black smoke and flames you couldn't breathe if you go in. And it was just no way we tried. You could hear her daughter up in the stairwell screaming we tried so hard,” said Billy Davis.
“It's a tragic loss it really is. I feel so sorry for these people, so sorry.”
