LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Nearly a week after its surprising closing, patrons of the iconic John E’s restaurant is finally getting answers from the owners.

In a handwritten statement faxed to WHAS11, owners Donnie and Dee Kamenish, Ronnie Kamenish and Bob Young explained their reason for closing their doors:

“This has been the most difficult decision we have had to make. The closing of John E’s Restaurant and Lounge was not something we ever thought we would have to do. We put every ounce of energy, blood, sweat, tears into a dream, only to have that dream shattered.

The economy, tough competition, ongoing maintenance issues and finances were factors leading up to this unwanted decision. We hope that everyone can understand how and why we came to this troubling conclusion.

John E’s was a very unique establishment with live entertainment. (The House Duo, Barb Polk and Eddie Humphries, The Doo Wop All-Stars, The Epics, Robbie Bartlett, The Don Krekel Orchestra, The Dave Mehl Big Band, and many more).

We had very strong relationships with our loyal customers and our employees; we were like family and friends.

We want to thank everyone for their support, concerns, thoughts and prayers through this difficult decision.

We hope that everyone can move on and always hold a special place in their hearts for John E’s.”
