LOUISVILLE, Ky -- Interstate 71 is shut down due to a serious accident that happened around 8:30 a.m. Monday.
WHAS11's Johnny Archer is at the scene and said a pregnant woman riding in the rear seat of a SUV was killed and two people in the front were critically injured when the driver swerved to avoid a semi truck while merging on to I-71 from the Gene Snyder Freeway.
Police said the SUV was traveling about 72 mph when the driver lost control and the vehicle flipped at least three times, then slammed in to a tree. The pregnant woman was lying down in the back seat and was not wearing a seat belt.
The driver and the front seat passenger were wearing seatbelts, police said, and had to be cut from the SUV. Both were transported to the hospital and are reported to be in critical condition.
One lane of I-71 southbound remains shut down and is expected to be closed until the scene is cleared. Northbound lanes have reopened.
The victim's ID or the names of those injured have been released.
