SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A massive fire has been burning for more than 24 hours in historic Downtown Shelbyville. Crews worked to remove debris brick by brick as firefighters allow flames to burn out on their own.

Nancy Hill, a history buff, said there have been a lot of fires on Main Street. Hill said the buildings were in existence for generations. They date back to the early 1700's.

"This was an old hotel that burned in 1903. The building still standing was a livery stable and it burned down too," Hill said.

The blaze started Wednesday in a building under renovation and destroyed Fiesta Mexicana Restaurant, Creative Spirits Counseling Center, a thrift store and apartment building.

"Right now we've been so busy trying to get the fire under control and all this taken care of that will come over the next few days," Tucker said.

Many feel like they lost a piece of themselves and had to see it for their own eyes.

A piece of history is gone and the building process could take months.

The owner of the Mexican restaurant suspects faulty electrical work started the blaze but the firefighters are still investigating the cause.
