LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Murder victim Rontrel Leak was killed Wednesday morning in the Hikes Point area. The 21-year-old was a graduate of Y Now, a program for teens who have an incarcerated parent. The goal is to give them a support system and ultimately put an end to a generational problem.

“Kids who have incarcerated parents are unfortunately more likely to become incarcerated themselves. So, the main goal of Y Now is break that cycle of incarceration,” YMCA Safe Place Services Executive Director Matt Reed, said.

Leak joined Y Now 8 years ago, right when the program started. Although the close mentoring lasts only a year, Leak stayed close to the staff.

“He remained connected and would look to us for support," Reed, said.

The staff at Y Now is currently asking why this? His mother says Leak had plans; like many of the children in the program.

Y Now said their focus hasn't shifted. If anything, the heartbreak encourages them even more to press on towards their goal.
