NORTH VERNON, Ind. (WHAS11) -- Ryan James Shelley, 27, is charged with the murder of an 18-month-old girl. Police said she was shaken unconscious at Shelley’s mother’s North Vernon home last Thursday. The girl was the daughter of Shelley’s girlfriend, Tomika.
Cammy Garrett is a friend with the suspect’s mother.
“She just wants Tomika and the family to know that she’s sorry and, you know, it’s going to be a long journey for both the families,” Garrett said.
Police said Shelley initially told police the girl fell from a counter. She was rushed to Kosair Children’s Hospital where doctors told police something else.
“Our officers went to the hospital and the doctors informed us that the injuries were not consistent with a fall from a counter,” said Major Jerry Shepherd, Jennings County Sheriff’s Office.
Shepherd said Shelley later admitted during an interview that he had shaken the baby because she wouldn’t stop crying. He’s being held without bond. Police also said he has a lengthy criminal history and is a registered sex offender.
