(WHAS11) -- A group of inmates rescued a pair of boys from a cold Washington river.

The boys' canoe capsized on Salmon Creek in Washington state on Wednesday.

A 16-year-old was able to swim to shore, but an eight and 10-year-old were left clinging to debris in the water.

Three inmates on work release nearby saw the boys and jumped in to save them. A technical rescue team then arrived to help pull the boys to shore.

The boys and two inmates were taken to the hospital for mild hypothermia.
