LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A UofL student is now on the short list for a mission to mars.

It’s a one way ticket. But Stephanie Bridges is OK with that and ready to become a pioneer.

Looking at the moon through a telescope as a little girl got her hooked on space.
Being part of a military family taught her something else, sacrifice.

And it would be a sacrifice, it's a one way ticket to Mars, you're not coming back.

Her parents, and six siblings, all get it. Stephanie says we all have a one way ticket on this Earth, some will stay here, and she may go elsewhere.

Stephanie grew up admiring pioneers like Neil Armstrong who took those first steps on the moon, and Sally Ride, who became the first woman in space.

This project is run by a group of scientists in the Netherlands Stephanie says Mars is the next logical step.

Two hundred thousand people answered the call to go to Mars and it’s been narrowed to just over 1,000, and Stephanie is still in the running.

The atmospheric science major hopes to know more by this summer.

She says she is following her dream, and hopes to know this summer, if she will get to live it!
