LOUISVILLE, Ky.(WHAS11)  — Louisville junior defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin has been involved in a hit and run acciddent while on a moped Tuesday morning.

Mauldin posted a career-high 22 tackles last season including team-high 4.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss. The Cardinals' depth chart lists him as the starter for Sunday's season opener against Ohio.

Cardinals athletic department spokesman Rocco Gasparro confirmed that Mauldin was involved in an accident near the school's Yum! Center training facility. Gasparro said Mauldin was "alert and responsive'"

Campus police are investigating and said witnesses told police a tan colored vehicle turned right on Hahn Street and hit Mauldin. The driver then drove off.

Both Mauldin and the other driver were headed north on South Floyd Street.

School officials said Mauldin will be kept overnight at Jewish Hospital for observation, but preliminary tests results do look good. At this point, it is unclear what Mauldin's injuries are or if they will impact his ability to play.

Campus police told WHAS11 they will be looking at surveillance cameras around the area in hopes of finding the driver.

Police plan on speaking with Mauldin to see if he can provide any further information on finding the driver. Police are also urging  witnesses to come forward or call 502-852-6511.
