LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Some scary moments on Friday night when a 40-foot tree came crashing through the roof of a house in Fern Creek.

"We heard this big giant crash, and we looked in and all this dust was falling in the room after it cleared we could see part of the cieling hanging down," said Sarah Weir.

From the outside the massive chunk of the tree caused a lot of damage, but on the inside of the house, the damage looks even worse.  Insulation and bits of ceiling and roofing litter the floor, furniture is turned over.

What's remarkable is that just moments before the tree fell, a group of teenagers had been hanging out in one room in the house. They stepped out to the covered porch to watch the storm, and it was a move that kept them out of harm’s way.

"If we had walked in two seconds earlier we probably would have gotten hit," said Sarah Weir.

The roof had just been replaced about two weeks ago, after a hail storm damaged it. The family is trying to laugh the latest damage off, saying they're just glad no one was hurt.

The family does have insurance.
