Famous trainers, D. Wayne Lucas, Nick Zito, and Bob Baffert were on hand to officially cut the ribbon to re-open the museum.
The museum suffered extensive damage during the August 2009 flood, but after a $5.5 million renovation, it reopened today. More than 3,000 people showed up to check it out.
The new Derby museum combines the rich history of Derby with new interactive exhibits.
Ken Hagen is a Louisville resident who attended Sunday’s grand re-opening. He felt like there was a little something there for everybody.
“The wife likes seeing all the hats and clothes,” he said, “and I like listening to the previous winners.
While August's flood was devastating, it gave the museum a chance to expand.
"There new artifacts that we have had in the collection," said Wendy Treinen, the museum's Director of Communications. "We haven't had space to display them before, so to be able to share them with the public is a real treat for us."
The museum is open for business daily, beginning at 8 a.m. Monday morning.
