LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Bobby Petrino has been hired as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers' new head football coach. The university made an official announcement Monday evening.

Petrino says he still has ties to the state of Kentucky and says it's like coming home. Petrino said during the news conference Monday that "this was a family decision." He is coming off being fired from Arkansas in the spring after a motorcycle crash later revealed that he hired his mistress in the football department.

Petrino said he and his wife Becky have been in counseling.

“Basically I’ve spent the last eight months working with my family and trying to make things right with my wife Becky and my children,” Petrino said.

Athletic Director Todd Stewart said Petrino was their top choice despite the scandal. He touted his professional success, including at UofL and he said he deserved a second chance.

“The way he answered the tough questions and the amount of detail that he provided and just how brutally honest he was and accepting responsibility for that,” Stewart said.

Petrino’s four year contract includes a base salary of $850,000 and a $300,000 bonus if the team makes a BCS bowl.
