(WHAS 11)--A popular Portland restaurant is in jeopardy of closing its doors for good to make way for a Family Dollar Store.

Hundreds of people who live in the area are fighting to keep the cavalier inn open despite the building's owner wanting to tear it down.

The building has sat at 26th and Market streets for nearly 150 years and just last month, the Metro Landmarks Commission voted to make it an historic landmark. But Metro Council woman Chery Bryant Hamilton will introduce plans at tonight's council meeting to review that status.

Concerned Portland residents have been blanketing the community with fliers asking more people to get involved in the fight to keep it open.
