LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Police say they are searching for the man they believe shot and killed another man in south Louisville Monday.

Darrell Jackson, 18, is the suspect in the shooting of Michael Chester, 27, at Chester’s apartment in the 4900 block of Saddlebrook Court around 11:30 a.m. Monday. Chester died at University Hospital from a gunshot wound at 9:10 p.m., according the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Police say the victim and the suspect are “known associates” and had gotten into an altercation with each other prior to the shooting.

Chester’s wife says they have a three-year-old daughter together. Police would not confirm if the wife and daughter were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. But, they do say there were several people present when Chester was shot.

“Obviously any situation is very tragic,” Lt. Barry Wilkerson with Metro Police said.  “This situation is a little bit different because there were others around. This does make the situation a little bit more volatile and more of a situation where we are concerned for the safety of others. But that is the push we need to get this individual off the street and that is why we are asking for the community’s help by calling 574-LMPD if you know where Mr. Jackson might be.”

Louisville Metro Police are in the process of taking out a warrant for Jackson’s arrest. He will not officially be charged with murder until he is in police custody.
