LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Shots rang out in the middle of the afternoon Wednesday at Beecher Terrace and by the time police arrived they found John Percell lying dead in the doorway of his girlfriend's apartment.

His mother said Percell had called her to pick him up over the weekend and he was in tears over a conflict he told her very little about.

"And he said, he came out and he said, 'mama, thanks y'all saved my life. He just kept on calling, 'mama, mama, this dude want to kill me.' and he said, 'mama, I’m still fearing for my life,'" Pamela Fields, Percell’s mother, said.

Fields said her son had been in and out of jail for years. He'd been let out the last time in November and she had pushed him to make more of his life.

"Me and my husband said, well, J you gotta stay up here and get you a job. J, get you a job, get you a job. He didn't listen to me," Fields said.

She talked to her son, who she calls "J", just hours before the shooting for the last time.

"He knew somebody was after him, but he was so angry he couldn't get to the guy. So, whoever got him, got J before J could get them," Fields said.

"Whoever saw it or knew who done it, turn him in cause sooner or later he gonna get it anyways, it doesn't make any difference really. When you do things around, when you do things to ya, things come back to ya, that's the way it is,” John Fields, Percell’s father, said.

This was the second shooting on that block in the same day.

Two men were shot just after midnight and neither had life-threatening injuries.

Police haven't said if the shootings are related.
