LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Many UofL fans were expecting the new football coach to be introduced to the crowd at the KFC Yum! Center on Thursday night, but, that didn’t happen.
Bobby Petrino was at the game, but it wasn’t going to be the night for his big welcome back to the Cardinals family.
Underneath the cheers at UofL’s game against Memphis, there was chatter that Bobby Petrino would make an appearance and be officially reintroduced to the crowd as the head football coach.
“I think the reaction would be good,” said Cards fan Debbie Kappes, “Most of the people at work were pretty positive about the move, which I was not in that camp, but they were positive, so I think it’ll be good.”
During halftime, fans shared their thoughts on the recent hire.
“I think he’s a great hire, he’s a perfect fit for Louisville. He’s the man that can lead them in the ACC,” Thomas Gorter said.
Famed commentator Dick Vitale, who was at the game, also weighed in saying, “he’s a winner, he will put W’s on the board. But, remember this, you’re supposed to be a college that deals with morality and many other issues with athletes. The message you’re sending is loud and clear; win, win, win.”
It’s a concern shared by many fans.
“Personally, he seems to be lacking a bit of a moral compass,” said Stephanie Cumea. “If he says he’s a changed man and that he’s ready to do the job and do it well, then that’s what’s important.”
As the game clock ticked down, Petrino never took center court. Instead, he watched the game from the stands. The message from many Cards fans, If Tom Jurich trusts Petrino, they will too.
“I hope everybody stands behind him,” said Gorter. “Because Jurich is definitely the best athletic director in the country, so you’ve got to stand behind the athletic director. He knows better than most of us.”
