LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A 17-year-old female student from Valley High School is at University Hospital after being hit by a mini-van in front of the school Wednesday morning.

Friends tell WHAS11 the girl, Gretchen Rennirt was a senior at the school. She is listed in critical condition. Louisville Metro Police say she may have been crossing Dixie Highway in front of the school, a few feet away from the crosswalk and before she had the right of way.

Valley High School Principal Gary Hurt says it’s a horribly tragic reminder of how cautious students and drivers need to be around schools.

“Well not just here, anywhere that you see kids and schools and school buses, obviously there's nothing more important than the safety of children. So all the adults in this community have to be mindful that it's dark in the morning and that we do have kids in the area around the high schools, around the middle schools and we always should be on the lookout for that. And slow down," said Hurt.

Metro Police are still investigating the accident. They do not believe drugs, alcohol, or speed were factors. The driver of the mini-wan was not injuried. It is not likely the driver will face any charges.
