(CNN) -- Hudson, New York had a serious problem. In a cemetery with graves of several veterans, someone was stealing American flags placed there to commemorate the veterans’ service. The Hudson police finally have a suspect. The only thing is, it’s not a human criminal. It’s a pesky little woodchuck.

The veterans were heroes from the Civil War.

Police Chief Ellis Richardson appears on this video. He says this is the first time he has seen such a thing in his law-enforcement career.

The police set up surveillance cameras, and that’s when they saw the hungry woodchuck apparently munching on one of the American flags. They also ran a camera down a woodchuck hole and found remnants of the missing flags.
