LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Police spent hours methodically removing evidence from a severely burned apartment building in the 400 block of Campbell Street in the Phoenix Hill neighborhood on Wednesday night.
Louisville Metro’s Viper Unit was trying to serve violent warrants to a man who lived there on Wednesday afternoon. Police said someone consented for them to come in, but then the suspect opened fire at an officer. No one was hurt, but neighbors heard the gunfire. “I flew to the floor! I was so scared. I was balling and some of the police officers came over to help you know,” Dona Mills said.
The SWAT team and other agencies arrived on scene, but the apartment later caught fire, photos here.
Police won’t say how it happened, but a body was found in the building after crews put out the blaze. Police have not said if the body was that of the suspect, but the discovery was enough to end the standoff.
“After the fire, I didn't see how he could survive that if he was still in the building after that big fire,” Tim Webb, store owner, said.
