LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- One Louisville couple was chosen to deck the White House with holiday décor. The couple gained access after winning a contest on a national television show.

The Halls were selected because of a birthday surprise and family history with the presidential office. It is a chance of a lifetime for Pete Hall and his wife. Not many people can say they have decorated the White House.

"She wrote Michelle Obama and the social secretary a letter explaining my situation and how she'd love to surprise me," Pete Hall said.

The Louisville couple was among only 85 people handpicked to deck the halls of the President's home as part of an HGTV show extravaganza.

Pete Hall, a ship captain, and his attorney wife say everyone else there was a florist or decorator.

When asked the one thing they will remember most Pete Hall had this to say.

"Well, that was it, being in the White House and having the free run of it. Going in the front door a lot of people talk tours but get hustled through real quick. We were in the Diplomatic Reception Room where people don't normally go. The china room which is very exclusive and the Vermeil Room the second largest collection in the world second only to the Vatican," Hall said.

But this isn't the first time his family was in the White House. His grandfather was the Chief Administrative Officer from 1938 to 1957 under President Harry S. Truman, helping to rebuild infrastructure.

"He had to work with the money and the process and also he was involved with Truman building the Truman balcony which most people were absolutely against," said Hall.

Receiving a thank you from First Lady Michelle Obama and spend time with their family dog - it's a surprise he'll never forget.

"We got a kick out of the dog Bo running through the house, all the girls loved that, yeah," Hall said.

The White House decorating show will air on Saturday on HGTV. Click here to view photos from the Hall's.
