LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A Louisville man is accused of swindling couples out of thousands of dollars and then fleeing the state.
Ramon Rodriguez turned himself into authorities after being on the run since 2009. His attorney, Brian Butler, says Rodriguez was living in Canada. Butler says Rodriguez contacted him in December because he wanted to turn himself in.
“It's pretty unusual to have someone who may have very likely gotten away with this forever to reach out and say, ‘I want to do the right thing, and I want to try and make this right, and make sure people get paid back,” Butler.
Allegedly Rodriguez would agree to shoot engagement or wedding photos for couples and then cash the deposit checks without showing up to do the job.
Police say he took more than $11,000 from 2008 to 2009. According to Police, Rodriguez skipped town back in April 2009 when he failed to return to police custody when he was on work release for violating his probation from an assault charge. According to court documents, Rodriguez was cited for a DUI and left the country before he was expected in court.
Butler says his client does intend to pay back the money he took.
