Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - When 7:00 a.m. rolled around Monday morning it was the moment Martha Jackson had been waiting for after spending 15 hours outside the south wing at the Kentucky fairgrounds.
“I just camped out to get away,” said Jackson of Louisville.
But for Jackson it was more about a chance to fill one of the 275 temporary positions available for this year’s Kentucky State Fair. She and hundreds of other job candidates waited in line for housekeeping, maintenance, tour guides and several other job openings. Jackson is looking to work with the live stock at the fair.
“I love animals,” said Jackson. “Cows, wolves, rabbits whatever you name it I love them. They’re all creatures.”
Kentucky State Fair officials are expecting thousands of people to come out and apply for jobs from August 8-28.
Many hope and pray they will be chosen during this rough economic period.
“Getting a job in this economy is truly a blessing because the economy is terrible,” said Anthony Williams, who worked the state fair two years ago and is looking for a job this year.
For some, the past two years have been difficult to maintain a stable paying job.
“It’s kind of hard these past two years,” said Gervonta Dorsua of Louisville. “It wasn’t this hard [in the past], it’s kind of hard now.”
Pay starts at $7.25 per hour. And applicant must be 18 years or older with valid identification. Application will be accepted from August 8-12 at the Kentucky Fairgrounds’ South Wing C and at Gate 4 from August 13-28.
