SHIELDSTOWN, Ind. (WHAS11) -- A crash into the White River killed 16-year-old Brooke Hawn Wednesday evening. Now, one of the teens she was riding with, 18-year-old Tyler Ross is charged with her death.
Investigators say Ross was driving a Mitsubishi passenger car carrying Hawn and a 19-year-old male.
Just after 5 p.m. on County Road 250 East near Shieldstown, the car flipped into the White River. The two men were able to escape through broken windows and call 911. Rescue crews pulled the car out of the water and found Hawn dead inside.
It's not clear if the crash killed her. The cause of death will be determined after an autopsy is performed.
Police said Thursday that speed and careless driving was a likely factor in the crash.
Ross was charged with Reckless Homicide and Operating a Motor Vehicle without Ever Having Received a License.
His bond has been set at $10,500.
