LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A spike in flu cases across the country has health officials urging Americans to get vaccinated.

The federal government says Indiana is one of 23 states reporting regional influenza outbreaks; one eastern Indiana hospital has reported 50 cases during the past week alone.

In Louisville the health department is reporting more than 900 cases of flu in the city--up from about 700 cases from this time in 2013.

Several deaths in Texas have been linked to the H1N1 strain of the disease also known as swine flu.

January and February are typically the peak flu months in the U.S.
