LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Despite not being able to reach an agreement on a U.S. Senate debate next week here at WHAS11, the campaigns of both Mitch McConnell and Alison Grimes said they are still hopeful to debate here.

After the McConnell campaign agreed to a debate Grimes at WHAS11 on September 5, the Grimes campaign informed WHAS11 management that she has a long-standing commitment on that date at her alma mater in Tennessee.

Both campaigns suggest the other side is to blame for the lack of progress in a debate agreement.

The McConnell campaign was first to agree to a WHAS11 debate. But the Grimes campaign alleges that McConnell's team intentionally chose a date that conflicted with Grimes' schedule.

Despite the impasse on a WHAS11 debate, both campaigns told WHAS11 talks continue with other debate proposals; about a dozen offers still active. As it stands the only debate both candidates have agreed to is Oct. 13 on KET.

WHAS11 will continue to push for a debate here which would include questions from the public, from me and from the candidates to each other.
