LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Tomorrow morning about 18,000 will hit the streets for the Kentucky Derby Festival marathon races – the mini marathon celebrating 40 years.
Doug Proffitt found some original coverage in the WHAS11 archives for this week’s Friday Flashback.
You'll see year number three, May2, 1977. The mini marathon was run on Monday morning and notice the faces on the people in business suits in Downtown Louisville as the runners head to the finish line.
The first race in 1974 drew 300 people. Former Mayor Harvey Sloane ran in the first mini and many others before leaving office in 1986.
The mini-marathon was later moved to the Saturday before the Derby and remains so to this day.
