LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A man has been charged in the stabbing death of another man near Churchill Downs.

LMPD Homicide detectives have charged Robert L. Mathews, 65, with one count of murder in connection with Sunday afternoon's homicide on West Kenton Street.

“You would have never thought in a million years it would have been them two. Maybe someone outside this clique. Them two…never,” said neighbor Kim Curry.

The victim, believed to be a white man in his 40s, was found stabbed and left for dead on a porch in the 200 block of West Kenton Street.  He was transported to University Hospital where he later died.

Police say a fight broke out between the two men before the fatal stabbing.  Neighbors say the two were best friends and spent nearly every day together and never imagined Mathews would hurt his friend.

“It’s sad to see it, because we know it’s not [like] him,,” said neighbor Billy.

Mathews was in his apartment for nearly two hours before police were able to take him out in handcuffs.  Mathews lives in an apartment complex around the corner from where the victim was found.

The coroner’s office has yet to release the identity of the victim.
