LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Elizabethtown Police are searching for a man who broke into one home and then attempted to target several others before getting away.

It is the first home burglary of the year here in an upscale subdivision of Elizabethtown and it's one that has rattled this community.

It happened Monday morning, March 17, in the 600 block of Freeman Lake Road. A woman was in the house at the time.

"She hears a sound and goes upstairs and happened to see walking out of a closet a young black male," Officer Virgil Willoughby with the Elizabethtown Police said.

According to police he ran from the house then crossed into a cul-de-sac nearby by and attempted to possibly break into other homes.

"I'd say that's a possibility. It's also a possibility he was trying to burglarize other homes," Willoughby said.

Residents that did not want to go on camera were clearly rattled by what happened. Some recall police coming to their door to check on their safety.  Police believe the intruder entered through an open garage door.

"Keep your doors locked at all times and your garage doors as well. If you are going to raise your garage door to start your vehicle and go back in the house, lock that door. You have to do everything you can do to protect yourself and your family," Willoughby said.

The intruder is only described as a black man who was wearing a hoodie.

Police say they do not believe he had time to take anything from the home.
