LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Early childhood education in Jefferson County continues to grow with a new facility in the Newburg neighborhood.

Mayor Greg Fischer celebrated the grand opening of the George Unseld Early Childhood Learning Center on Ilex Avenue just off Indian Trail.

The center is named for the late Metro Councilman George Unseld, who died in 2010.

“Today, my heart is so full. I'm so proud, so grateful and so honored to be a part of the dedication ceremony for this amazing man. I know he's looking down, laughing with that infectious laugh of his. I know that he is pleased and he is happy,” Jeanie Unseld-Williams said. “On behalf of my family, thank you all so much for honoring George. And to my daddy, I want to say congratulations. I love and miss you still."

The center will be home to nearly 400 early childhood students, 19 in preschool and headstart classrooms. The facility is the largest for the Louisville area.
