LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A family gathering ends with four people in the hospital after a deck collapses at the Heritage Hill Apartment Complex off Old Sage Court.

Ambulances responded around 6 p.m. Sunday to the Heritage Hills apartment complex.

Ten-year-old Caleb McFarland was nearby when the two-story deck collapsed.

"When I was playing with my friends I heard a big crash and then I heard fire trucks and ambulances," said Caleb McFarland.

John Wright lives in the apartment where the deck crumbled. He says he felt his home move.

"I heard call 911. Call 911. Call 911," said Wright.

Wright said the four adults had been on the deck for less than five minutes before it collapsed and sent all four of them to the hospital. One woman broke her ankle.

Wright said, "Somebody could have been underneath there. Somebody could have been dead."

Residents of the complex told WHAS11 maintenance had replaced some of the decks because of safety concerns. Wright said he is angry at the damage he sees outside his door.

"I was pretty upset. We've been complaining about us getting [it] fixed for the longest."

Wright said the damage could have been avoided, and his friends did not have to end up in the hospital after what was supposed to be a fun family gathering.

A building inspector will be at the complex on Monday checking the safety of several decks.

WHAS11 attempted to reach out to the apartment manager, but calls where not returned.
