FALL RIVER, Mass. (ABC and WHAS)--The body of a Massachusetts mother was found at the bottom of a public pool after police said she drowned.
Many are asking how could this possibly happen after 36-year-old Marie Joseph, who went to the pool with Sunday her children and a neighbor's 9-year-old son, drowned and lay unnoticed on the bottom of the pool for three days.
Police said Joseph was waiting for the 9-year-old to come off of a slide when she went into after the child and never surfaced. The child told a lifeguard who said he would check the pool.
In fact, her body was not discovered until Tuesday - floating on the surface.
Six lifeguards were on duty Sunday afternoon through Tuesday and two city health inspectors tested the pool's water Monday. Another inspector returned Tuesday to do more testing.
Fall River Mayor William Flanagan said PH levels were normal but the water in the pool was cloudy.
"I just don't see how they missed it. Somebody wasn't doing their job, somebody wasn't paying attention," Police Chief Daniel Racine said.
Police said Joseph did not know how to swim.
