JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) -- The Clark County prosecutor’s office put out a warrant for the arrest of 21-year-old William Mackle on Friday for sexual misconduct with a minor.

Mackle, a volunteer with Jeffersonville High School’s marching band, is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old member of the band.

“In many of these types of cases, this comes to light when the parents are proactive and get onto the devices, the computers, and phones – and see what’s going on,” Jeremy Mull, Chief Deputy Prosecutor for Clark County, said.

Police said the 14-year-old’s parents found hundreds of text messages between her and Mackle on their daughter’s iPad and cell phone.  The mother turned the devices over to police.

Mackle told police he did not mean for the relationship to happen, and that they met through friends in band, according to Jeffersonville police.  In texts offered in a report, the two say they are in love.

The two did become physical in September, which is when the parents discovered the relationship, according to Mull.

"This is probably the third or fourth case I've had in the past few weeks that involved someone who's twenty-one, or older years of age... in some kind of position of authority over a teenager who then gets involved inappropriately with that teenager,” Mull said.

Jeffersonville High School does do background checks on their volunteers.  If convicted, Mackle could face two to eight years in prison.
