CORYDON, Ind. (WHAS11) -- An elderly woman is staying in a New Albany nursing home after family transferred her for her own safety. The elderly woman claims she was sexually assaulted at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation Center in Corydon.

"Where this goes is unclear. I will say our victim is reported to have early onset dementia which makes things a little more challenging from the law enforcement side," Otto Schalk, Harrison County Prosecutor, said.

Serious allegations of sexual abuse were made by an 84-year-old woman.  Schalk says despite her illness it's not something detectives take lightly. Corydon's Police Chief, James Kendall, and Indiana State troopers have Kindred Transitional Care in Corydon under a microscope.

The elderly woman said she was sexually abused in the nursing care facility at 150 Beechmont Drive, Monday of last week.

Their executive director was not available on camera but released this statement:
"Resident care and safety is our number one concern. We take these allegations very seriously. Upon learning of these allegations we took appropriate action and will continue to cooperate with the investigation. Due to patient confidentiality we cannot comment further."

Schalk says their detectives' investigation hinges on test results from Floyd Memorial Hospital where the woman was examined. Police are now waiting on a State Crime Lab in Indianapolis for conclusive evidence.

It's not a case where someone broke into the nursing center. Police still need to interview the elderly woman, staff members and other nursing care residents.

"Certainly if, and it's a big if, [if] anything happened we would be looking at anyone who had access to the facility and to the victim," Schalk said.

Detectives expect test results by this week and will use that information to continue their investigation.
