(WHAS11) -- An alert 5-year-old boy recognized the shrill sound of smoke detectors and awoke his sleeping mother in their New Albany home on Cliffwood Court.

Smoke and flames filled the attic and damaged much of the roof and second floor, but the alert child gave the family, including his baby sister who was also asleep, enough time to escape the house without injury. It happened just before 2 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighters arrived and put out the fire, which they say started in the attic, though the cause is unknown.
