Radcliff man convicted of rape of 2 children faces sentencing today

(WHAS11) - A 40-year-old Radcliff man says he, quote, “fell in love” with an 11-year-old girl and he will now learn his sentence for the rape of those girls today.

William “Bill” Roy Helm was on trial in Elizabethtown for having sex with two underage girls. They were his girlfriend’s daughters.

After a week-long trial, the jury got the case around 11:00 a.m. Friday morning. 

After a full day of deliberations the jury finally reached a verdict.

They found Helm guilty on five counts of second degree rape, two counts of first degree sexual abuse, and two counts of second degree sodomy.

He was found not guilty on two counts of first degree rape and sodomy.

During the trial, the jury heard from the defendant Bill Helm.

He described his relationship with the two girls, and admitted to having sex with them both.  The victims—now 15 and 17 -- also testified saying he had sex with both of them when they were under the age of 12.

In Kentucky, sex with a child under the age of 12 is considered rape and is punishable by up to 20 years for each count.

The jury was made up of eight women and four men.
