Former HR employee at American Greetings, UPS accused of multiple identity thefts

06:25 PM EDT on Friday, August 1, 2008

WHAS11 coverage

(WHAS11) - The FBI, the Secret Service, U.S. Customs and police are investigating a case of identity theft from inside the human resources department at one of Nelson County's top employers.

Watch this story

Bardstown Police have arrested the assistant human resources manager of American Greetings on multiple felony charges after they say he stole the identities of at least 10 employees at the plant. Now, hundreds of people are worried they might have been victimized by someone they trusted.

Police have arrested American Greetings’ former Assistant Human Resources Director William David Kaelin.

He was caught trying to use a co-worker's personal information to obtain a $10,000 dollar loan at a bank.

Police say Kaelin showed bank employees a fake driver's license and fake social security card.

But his intended victim had already taken precautions against identity theft.

Police say Kaelin used the identity of his co-workers on other occasions to steal.

They say Kaelin had already received a $20,000 loan in the name of one of the victims.

Police seized Kaelin's computer, 3 fake ids, a fake social security card and several credit cards obtained in other people's names.

They say he admitted to stealing 10 employees' identities during the past 16 months, using his computer at home and at work.

Police say there are hundreds of other potential victims at American Greetings plant and thousands at UPS, where Kaelin worked as a human resources manager for 7 years.

Among the things authorities say he bought with the credit cards he obtained: plane tickets for people who live overseas.

That now has the FBI, the Secret Service and U.S. Customs involved.

We spoke with more than a half-dozen plant workers Friday off-camera. All were reluctant to give on-camera interviews.

Most are taking measures now to try to find out if their information was stolen.

WHAS11 received a written statement from the American Greetings Corporate Office on Friday afternoon saying that as of Thursday, Kaelin was no longer an employee of the company.

Kaelin is currently free on bond.
