Despite economy, some businesses around Louisville are expanding

(WHAS11) - Businesses all over the city are struggling right now in this tough economy.  But not all of them are feeling the negative effects. In fact, for some, business is better than ever.

It seems to be a rare moment nowadays in Louisville. a new business opening.  Sol Aztecas is expanding its business, with this new restaurant on Frankfort Avenue.

Saul Garcia says, "We're going to improve the income for the city.  And we're going to have an impact on the economy."

The economic downturn has more businesses closing than opening.  Local restaurants have been hit particularly hard.  But not Saul Garcia's restaurants.  He says 2008 has been his best year yet.

Saul Garcia says, "2008 for a lot of people hasn't been good for small businesses especially.  It's been really tough, but not for us."

Joe Reagan, with Greater Louisville Inc., says while Sol Aztecas is somewhat of an anomaly in Louisville right now, it's not unheard of.

Joe Reagan says, "Today we had four ribbon cuttings at businesses locally owned that are starting up in different locations, communities.  So I think people are forging ahead, trying to make sure that they serve their customer and do well in this challenging time."

And while he admits more businesses are closing than are opening right now, he believes that because of the businesses, like Sol Aztecas, that are doing well, the city of Louisville will be able to survive.

Joe Reagan says, "It's a very difficult time and there obviously have been more cutbacks than expansions, but I think people are making decisions about the long haul and knowing that this is a downturn and we will come out of this, but we've got to be prepared for it and move forward."

About 150 people work for the Sol Aztecas restaurants.  Saul says if his success continues, he may expand yet again.
