Glitch causes some offenders to be left off registry
06:23 PM EST on Friday, December 30, 2005
The folks in Harrison County, Indiana want to know who their neighbors are, but the website designed to help them find out if sex offenders are living in their neighborhoods isn't up to speed. “Is it fair to the public? I would say no the public really needs to know all this information,” says Sgt. Bryan Byrne. Information about these people, 41 in all, convicted of sexual assaults, mostly against children. Of all the files you see here, only eight appear on the sex offender registry online. The Harrison County sheriff's department has not been able to get all of their information electronically to the state to post it on the site. “What the glitch is itself I couldn’t tell you but as of right now, we haven't been able to get somebody down here to reinstall the software and correct our issues,” Byrne says. And because of the glitch, “he actually no longer lives at this address, he lives in Milltown.” “Once we get the current software going, it shouldn't be but two or three days after, I’ll put all this information on the on the 'net and let everybody know.” Web story produced by Jay Ditzer.
