"Fresh air for everyone"

10:21 AM EDT on Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Fresh air for everyone is the goal of the Strategic Toxic Air Reduction program, or S.T.A.R., as its supporters call it.

“This is about breathing proper air and taking care of our air,” says Lauren Kehr, a S.T.A.R. supporter.

The S.T.A.R. program aims to reduce toxic chemicals in the air by forcing Louisville industries to clean up – no exceptions.

“I’m a member of the community and I love clean air,” says Phil Baldyga. “And I think we need strong regulations to keep it clean, or actually clean it up.”

“As proven in our studies, that we get very strict air quality standard and this is an investment in our future and our children’s health,” says Kathy Hinko.

The plan would not only examine industry but also “any other source that put the toxic air in the air we breathe,” says Karen Cassidy of the Air Pollution Control Board.

Those against S.T.A.R. say its stringent guidelines will push business out. At this time, the Air Pollution Control Board is considering a number of amendments to the S.T.A.R. plan.

“It provides a lot more clarity for everyone, the regulated community as well as those that have to enforce the regulations,” says Cassidy.

If S.T.A.R. passes the vote Tuesday, it will be implemented July 1, but it will take seven years for all the regulations to go into effect.
