Southern Indiana tries to dry out

07:31 AM EST on Monday, March 13, 2006

Henryville -- For some in the northern end of Clark County, they are use to the rain but not this early.

On Saturday, heavy rains caused some major problems for those living along US 31 from about Memphis to Henryville.

"It didn't take long for the water to start going down," said Debbie Kleehammer, who saw her 100 year old farm house surrounded by water.

But it did not get inside.

"The last time that happened was in 1992," she said.

In several intersections along US 31, high water signs were put in place after the road was flooded through the day.

"This is the highest I have ever seen 31 at this time of the year when it comes to water," said Anthony Guffey of Henryville.

There were no reports of any serious damage or flooding because of the high water. But the Sellersburg Fire Department did have to assist some families in getting out of their homes as water surrounded them.

"We are kind of high and dry on Ebenzer Road," said Crissy Knox of Memphis. "But it is so wet and there is water all around us. It kind of looks like a moat.

She and her husband and two children were out driving around checking on family and friends but she say many people have come to expect this kind of weather.

"When ever there is a heavy rain it seems like US 31 floods," she said.

Much of the waters were beginning to receed by late Saturday afternoon.
