Pence: Fletcher treated naysayers as enemies

03:24 PM EST on Thursday, November 29, 2007

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Lieutenant Governor Steve Pence says Governor Fletcher’s administration treated people with political differences as enemies.

Pence says administration officials too often considered as an enemy anyone who disagreed with the governor or did not fully back him up. He says that type of thinking is unhealthy and only ends in defeat, because enemies are usually considered as somebody that should be destroyed.

Fletcher and Pence had a stormy four years in office together. Pence decided not to be Fletcher’s second-term running mate after the governor was indicted on misdemeanor charges for alleged state hiring violations.

Fletcher then stripped Pence of his official duties. Pence also backed Fletcher’s GOP rival, former US Representative Anne Northup, in last spring’s primary election.
