Coroner discusses "mercy killings"

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Sherry Hoover says her mother experienced low blood sugar while she lived at Parkway Medical Center, dying from brain injuries that could have been caused by low blood sugar. Now Ssherry is wondering if her mom was murdered.

Mary Ann Hoover was 64 when she died in May after a four-year stay at Parkway.

According to Sherry Hoover, her mother occasionally suffered low blood sugar levels while at parkway. Mary Ann Hoover wasn't diabetic and didn't need insulin. Her death certificate says she died from cerebral bleeding. Critically low blood sugar levels can cause a swelling of the brain.

We know one Parkway resident, Marcelline Vale, had critically low blood sugar levels in July, apparently from an insulin overdose, and died a month later. Records we've obtained show it was Parkway administrators who first reported that three of the home's residents, including Vale, had critically low blood sugars on July 5.

Sources tell us that law enforcement agencies are checking to see if any other Parkway residents, including some who died months ago, may have been murder victims. And family members like Sherry Hoover are left wondering, was it her mom's time to die, or did she have some help?

Since we first broke this story Wednesday night, a number of folks have called our newsroom wondering if their loved ones might be part of the ongoing investigation. Feel free to keep calling.

And if you think a loved one's death at Parkway or any other nursing home needs investigating, call the attorney general's abuse hotline at 877-ABUSETIP or 877-228-7384.
