18 JCPS teachers, whose contracts were not renewed, will not be getting their jobs back
11:49 PM EDT on Thursday, July 24, 2008
Late Thursday afternoon, a judge denied their request to be temporarily reinstated while the lawsuit plays out in court.
The teachers union said the district didn’t follow the proper procedure and are suing the district on behalf of the teachers.
Judge James Shake issued the ruling, saying it was unclear as to the exact terms of the agreement, between the Jefferson County Teachers Union and the District. A small victory in court for the district, but the teachers union says their case isn’t over yet.
The judge’s order comes as court records reveal more information about why the teachers contracts were not renewed. According to the documents, teachers let students skip class, one failed to show up for a drug treatment program, some talked to students in a derogatory manner and one teacher is accused of helping students on their CATS testing.
The teachers union says the teachers were not given enough notice of any problems the district had with them. The district says that policy only applies to tenured teachers.
