With high gas prices, more people are riding bikes but are bike thefts up too?
11:35 AM EDT on Friday, July 25, 2008
high gas prices, some people are pumping… instead of gassing-up.
WHAS investigated whether or not the increase in cyclists, may have more people stealing two-wheels, instead of four.
Precise figures aren’t available, because not every bike theft is reported to police. But last year, at least, thousands of bikes were stolen in Metro Louisville and judging from bike popularity right now, that’s not likely to drop.
And just a fraction of those stolen bikes, will be up for auction this summer via the city’s Surplus Property office. Browse websites and you’ll find a plethora of ads posting pictures of their bikes stolen, just in recent days, hoping someone may spot them.
The pain at the pump has everyone looking for alternatives, and second to walking, bikes are more popular than ever.
Experts are saying that if you choose to ride a bike, instead of paying for gas, buy the locks and equipment that will keep the bikes from being stolen; and never leave them outside overnight.
