Police responded just before midnight to a house near US421 and 36.

They found a woman with minor injuries from an assault; she was taken to a nearby medical facility.

Then at the home, police say Jack D. Berressem Jr., 47, began firing at the troopers and barricaded himself inside, periodically exiting to shoot at the officers.

Around 2:30 a.m., was shot and killed by officers.

Lieutenant Fred Williams and Sergeant Howard Rice, both 10-year veterans with Kentucky State Police, will be on administrative duty pending investigation.

That's standard policy for the department. The investigation is ongoing.

We've obtained Berressem's lengthy arrest history in Louisville, dating back to 1986.

Prior charges include domestic violence and abuse, assault, and several DUIs.
