One dead after storm strikes southern Indiana town

06:42 PM EDT on Sunday, May 30, 2004

Associated Press

MARENGO, Ind. — A storm has ripped through the southern Indiana town of Marengo, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

Crawford County's director of emergency management, Ralph Seacat, says the storm hit the heart of the community about 35 miles northwest of Louisville, Ky. One building is reported to have collapsed and many others are damaged.

Seacat says several people have been injured. Harrison County Hospital in Corydon says at least one storm victim has been brought there and they are expecting more.

Authorities are concentrating on making sure they can account for everyone who was in the town of about 800 people when the storm hit. Seacat says they're also trying to restore power and telephone service and clear streets of debris.

A shelter has been established at Crawford County High School.
